The first census for the Commonwealth was in 1785, while the first Federal census was taken in 1790.

Poll taxes on the tithable population in each county Parish were enacted to meet the expense of county government.

Until the latter part of the 17th century, members of the governor's council were exempt from taxation.

 

The 1890 census was destroyed in a fire in Washington D.C. in 1921.
