Here at the ancient seat of Red House
were buried our immigrant ancestor
John Pay of Lancaster and Rappahannock,
Born in England about 1615,
His sons Richard, John and George,
and other members of his family,
his son William was buried at Yeocomico,
to their honored memory we their descendants
have erected this wall and tablet.
1934.

~ Interments ~ |
|
Sacred to the Memory of Mr. Daniel Payne who is here
interred with his
ancestors. He was born September 16, 1728, and departed this
life April 12,
1796, at Falmouth where he had resided many years building
the mercantile
Business. He purified it through life with reputation and
succels his
execution. Charles Yates hath caused this monument to be
erected in
remembrance of their long acquaintance and friendship and as
a testimony of
his attached regard and esteem.
(This
is a flat concrete tomblike cover)
(The line reading, "He purified
it though life with ... and ... his
execution", was very difficult to read. Not sure exactly
what it was saying.
Any help appreciated.) |

When I visited the
cemetery, I failed to pay attention to the direction
of N-S-E and W. Most cemeteries bury facing the
East; therefore, I will ASSUME that this cemetery
held with that tradition. First row inscriptions are
from the southwest corner to the northwest corner;
next working south to north: Last row of headstones,
beginning in the southeast corner working to the
northeast corner. Hope this was of interest to
some or many. -
