Yeocomico Church
Circa 1655 ~ Kinsale


 

The church, on the site of one of the earliest Christian places of worship in the New World, began as a wooden chapel built in 1655 & was replaced in 1706 with the present structure. Membership included many of the early famous families of Virginia, including Washington, Lee & Carter. Yeocomico Church is home to the only wicket door in Colonial America.  This great door weighs 1,000 pounds and is said to be a vestige of the earlier wooden church of 1655.
