Uncle Simon
Westmoreland Virginia

There lives on the main road from Oldham’s X Roads to King’s Mill, in a neat house of his own, a remarkable old colored man in the person of Uncle Simon Green.  Uncle Simon was born on the 15th day of November 1825, and belonged to the late Wm. J. Courtney.  And while uncle Simon has, during his long life, always had a very large circle of friends, he does not hesitate to say that our esteemed and worthy friend W. J. Courtney, a son of his former owner, has been one of his best, loaning him money time and time again without any note or security, and with pleasure granting every favor he ever asked.

In the prime of his young manhood, he was a giant in both physique and strength, and is very strong and active for his years yet.  Twenty years ago he was a power in the Republican organization of his native county, and to have him with you was to win.

On the 15th day of November 1853, Uncle Simon was married to Charlotte Gordon, a servant of James Chandler, and as man and wife they have since lived happily together, being greatly blessed in raising a large family, and never in all these years having to pay as much as ten dollars for doctor’s bills, and all that Mr. Wm. J. Courtney ever paid a doctor for Uncle Simon was $1.00 to Dr. Wheelwright for pulling a tooth.

Uncle Simon and Aunt Charlotte celebrated their golden wedding on the evening of the 15th day of last November, and had a most pleasant and enjoyable time, and received from their children and friends the following gifts in money: Mr. W. H. Courtney, $7.00; from their sons, Grant, Hays, Daniel, Isaiah and Anderson $75.00; from Amie Campbell, $5.00; Jane Tate, $5,00; Julia Clayton, $5.00; Edward Green and family $5.00; A. T. Johnson and family, $5.00; F. T. Crawley and family $5.00, and there were many more handsome, useful and most highly appreciated presents.  The writer is glad to number Uncle Simon among his friends and, and has ever found him courteous, appreciative and kind, and hopes that his last days may be his best, and that when his life ends here he may be able to say “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.” SELDOM
