Edwin Mirvish, born in
Colonial Beach 1914. Officer of the Order of Canada.
- Came to Canada in 1923 & became well
known as 'Honest Ed ' of discount department store and
restaurant fame. He bought the Royal Alex in 1962 and the Old
Vic in 1982. Since he acquired the former, over 400
productions have been presented there and he is proud to say that it
has been open 52 weeks of the year since he took over. With
his son he presented many notable productions at both houses
including the Mikado directed by Brian MacDonald that went on
to tour, to Broadway, and was nominated for a Tony. Ed also
purchased the buildings surrounding his theaters which is now Toronto's
main entertainment district.
'Honest Ed' passed away July
11, 2007 in Toronto, Canada. He was 92 years old.
