A descendant of the emigrant John Payne who came
to Virginia Colony with his brother William in
1620. Graduated from William and Mary
College in 1833 and the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1836; sailed for Africa as a
missionary and in 1841 returned to the United
States in broken health. |
