In 1844, James Joseph McDonald wrote in his book Life in Old Virginia: A Description of Virginia More Particularly the Tidewater Section... that the Westmoreland County Virginia Courthouse was burned with the loss of Records from 1653 - 1657.

Wakefield was burned during the Revolutionary War, but one table is said to have survived.

Missing Order Books: 1764 – 1776 and early marriage bonds.   Most of the record books prior to the Revolution are transcriptions completed between 1800 – 1850’s and may contain errors.

Westmoreland County Record books do not exist from 1844 through 1864

Several homes in the county suffered from harsh fires...  Shellfield, destroyed about 1962; The Colonial Beach Hotel, an old side-hall brick federal home, circa 1840's; Pope's Creek, burned, 1779; Cambellton burned in 1931.
