... Whereas Jonathan MOTTERSHEAD hath
repaired to the office by our Agents and hath
there suggested that there is a certain parcel
of land or dividend of land situate in the
freshes of Potomack(sic)
between the forks of Little Hunting Creek in
county Stafford belonging to us not yet granted
to any person and thereupon paid the composition
for 301 acres by means whereof he obtained a
warrant directed to one of our Surveyors to
survey and give bounds to the same in order to
obtain this present grant which warrant being
duly returned together with Platt & bounds
thereof to our said office Know ye therefore
that we for and in consideration of the
composition paid by Jonathan MOTTERSHEAD
for our use at the obtaining of the afsd warrant
do hereby grant to him the said Jonathan
MOTTERSHEAD all that parcel of land being
upon Little Hunting Creek in county Stafford
afsd bounded... beginning at a Hickroy being the
upper corner tree of Giles VANDEGASTEELS land on
the South branch at a small hickory ... thence
up the south branch according to the meanders
thereof ... to a small red oak in sight of
Edward KENNINGTONs thence out into the woods ...
to a white oak by a branch of the north run ...
thence to a white oak in Giles VANDEGASTEELs
line thence along VANDEGASTEELs line ... to a
white oak corner tree of Vandegasteels thence
... to the beginning containing & being now laid
out for 301 acres ... 5th October 1694.

[It
should also be noted here that since at least
1691/92 Jonathan MOTTERSHED had been
living on this 301 acres on Little Hunting Creek
that he received the pattent for in 1694. This
is proven by a transfer of land from George
BRENT to William BOWRNE in 1691/92]:
"To
all to whom these presents shall come I George
BRENT of Woodstocke in Stafford County... have
granted to him ye said William BOWRNE his heires
one hundred & fifty acres of my Lande att Little
Hunting Creek in ye County aforesaid being part
of a divident of Five hundred and Eighty four
acres of lande on which dividend Jonathan
MOTHERSHED now lives (Viz) begininge(sic) on
the upper side of ye said Jonathan MOTHERSHED
Plantation & extending from ye Little Hunting
Creeke side to back line of said Divident from
thence along ye back line for ye breadth of one
hundred & fifty acres of lande..." |
