Sir—I have just examined a miniature of
Sir Walter Raleigh, executed in enamel.
It is the most complete and
elegantly executed painting of this kind
I ever saw— indeed, it requires more
than a mere occular examination of the
colours, which are exceedingly
brilliant, to decide that it is not a
most superior painting, executed upon
ivory with water colours.
This miniature was found in 1793 on the
farm of Mr. A. J. Willard [Wilsford?]
in Westmoreland county, Virginia. It
was turned up by a black man when hoeing
corn. The land upon which it was found
was heavy timber but two years before.
The present owner has been offered $250
for it by an artist, for the purpose of
speculation.
This painting becomes an object of much
interest when we reflect that it has
been buried in the soil of Virginia more
than two hundred years.
It may be seen at the Court Room of the
Masonic Hall on Wednesday and Thursday.
We feel certain that no one, after
having seen it, will feel that he has
been imposed upon by himself to give 12
¼ or 25 cents to see it—more especially
when he knows this the money thus
collected is for benevolent purposes-
Besides this painting, those who are
fond of novelty and variety will see
much, from the industrious finders of
our Baltimore ladies, worthy of
attention. A CITIZEN |
