Incorporated by the General Assembly in 1834, Washington Academy went bankrupt in 1844, with the loss of it's first principal, H. J. Forster, A.M.

The main portion of the house was built in 1834, and was the chief building for the private school, Washington Academy.  The single story portions were added later.

Currently the land is planted with grapes and is one of Virginia's renowned vineyards.
