Robert 'King' Carter counted twenty-three grist mills, able to grind over 30,000 bushels a year, enough to meet local Westmoreland County demands.

Col. Isaac Allerton & John Lee were partners of Beale's Mill & Pond on Nomini Creek beginning 1670.  Richard Lee inherited his brother John's portion when he died, who then sold it to Isaac in 1674.

Thomas Lee began construction shortly after the purchase of the property.  Custom grinding was done for the neighbors.

ON THE RIVER A SHORT DISTANCE SOUTH IS THE SITE OF THE BRISTOL IRON WORKS, WHICH WERE PROJECTED BY JOHN KING & COMPANY, OF BRISTOL, ENGLAND, & ESTABLISHED IN 1721 BY JOHN TAYLOE, JOHN LOMAX & ASSOCIATES. THE WORKS, WHICH WERE ON THE FOXHALL'S MILL PROPERTY OWNED IN 1670 BY MAJOR UNDERWOOD, WERE IN OPERATION IN 1729 & LATER.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chandlers Grist Mill

This mill operated up until the 1940's.  The oldest mill & millpond in Westoreland County and one of the oldest in Virginia.  Thomas Newton accquired the property in the 1700's and rebuilt the mill and enlarged the dam.
