The original portion of the house was constructed circa 1770 with an addition added about 1858 by George M. Carter.  At the same time, a dependency on the property was also renovated.

In the 1950’s a elegant and rare Rockaway Coach, built around 1860, was discovered in a shed on the property and is now on display at D.C.'s Smithsonian Institution.
