Gustavus White
"Mr. Editor--Please allow me a small space in your valuable
paper. I want to write a few lines in regard to the death of
one of our old soldiers, Gustavus White...He was one of six
brothers, who enlisted in the Confederate army in the spring of
1862. There were among them two lots of twins, namely: John
and Thomas, Cornelius and Gustavus. Henry, the oldest was
killed in the battle of Seven Pines, while taking General
Pettegraw (Pettigrew), our brigadr commander, who was severly
wounded (from the field)...James, the next oldest brother, was
wounded at Gettysburg, and taken to Staunton, his leg was
amputated and he died from the operation. Thomas and Cornelius
died from disease in the hospital in Richmond. John was wounded
in March near Hanover C. H. He fell at my side; I though he ws
killed, but it happened to be a spent ball from a sharp
shooter...Gustavus was accidentally wounded in the hand going
into Chancellorsville battle...As Orderly Sergeant of Co. C 47th
Va. Reg. I have called his name hundreds of times.
Respectfully,
R. F. Parker
